April’s book is The Juvie Three by Gordon Korman: “Gecko, Terence, and Ajay are serving time in juvenile detention centers until they get a second chance. Douglas Healy, a former juvenile delinquent himself, takes them into his halfway house, hoping to make a difference in their lives. One night there is a scuffle, and Healy is accidentally knocked unconscious. When he awakes in the hospital, he has no memory of them or of the halfway house. Afraid of being sent back to Juvie, the guys hatch a crazy scheme to continue on as if the group leader never left.

But if the boys are found out, their second chance will be their last.”

Distraction Kit Workshop

Distraction Kit Workshop

Monday, April 14th, 3:30pm - 4:30pm

Empowering youth for the prevention of suicide - Youth Stability and Support Alliance (YSSA) aims to raise awareness about the growing number of suicide cases among youth by sharing different coping strategies. This particular approach - distraction kits - focuses on using physical toys and objects to help ease distress and provide a healthy distraction.

The distraction kit includes commonly used coping items designed to help individuals manage moments of intense anxiety, sadness, or overwhelming emotions. While not a cure for mental health challenges, these tools offer a way to regain focus and calm during difficult moments. The goal is to provide support for depressive episodes, or times of distress, helping prevent impulsive decisions.

Students in grades 6-12 are invited to join us in making their own distraction kit at this workshop lead by members of YSSA. Register online: https://bccls.libcal.com/event/14391170

Learn more about YSSA on their website: https://www.youthstabilityandsupportalliance.com/
