States Gilman Beezley “As an intuitive artist, I appreciate how monotypes, a form of printmaking that produces one-of-a-kind images, allow me to tap into my stream of consciousness. I especially love ‘happy accidents’ when ink takes on a life of its own to create unexpected results. Because monotypes can be done quickly, I am able to do multiple iterations of the same subject. An example of this is “Roadside Glory”, part of my “Road Less Travelled” series. Lately I have been applying color on top of monotypes using combinations of chalk pastel, oil pastel, watercolor, ink and acrylic medium. These layers of color add dimension and tension as the water-based and oil-based mediums compete with each other. To create a monotype, I apply (or remove) black etching ink onto a zinc plate using rollers, cardboard, brushes, rags, paper towels, palette knives and fingers. Once I am satisfied with the image, the zinc plate is covered with a dampened heavyweight paper and run through a printmaking press which transfers a mirror image onto the paper. Color may be applied once the ink is dry.”
