Join Local Historian and Glen Rock Police Detective James Calaski for this informative lecture. While researching his masters thesis topic, the German American Bund, Calaski came across documents regarding a resident of Glen Rock named Carl Schiphirst. Schiphorst resided in Glen Rock during the 1940s and was a leader of the Bergen County Unit of the Bund, as well as the target of a 145-page FBI investigation suspecting Schiphorst of being a Nazi agent. For nearly a decade, Calaski has been researching Schiphorst, his investigation, internment, and ultimate repatriation to Germany. This story, while specific to one individual, takes place within the broader context of World War II, a period marked by the Holocaust—the genocide of millions of Jews at the hands of the Nazis.
